Although Texas hold'em has become one of the most popular forms of poker today, the game has a number of variants. In Texas hold'em, players are dealt two cards face down and share five common cards in the middle. Five-card stud gives players two cards, but one of them is face up. Betting takes place at different intervals as cards are revealed.

As opposed to Texas hold'em, where there are forced bets based on position (called "blinds"), stud poker requires the player with the lowest visible hand to make the first bet. Once common cards are dealt, the player with the highest showing card can choose to bet, check or raise. This process continues until all the cards are revealed and the best hand is determined.

Stud poker requires an understanding of a certain amount of strategy to be successful. Since one card is always visible, it is a little harder to bluff.
